That catches an outage and nothing else. One machine here does something different. It holds a reference signature of what this lab normally looks like, across 10 frequency bands, and measures the current state as a distance from that. Not up or down. How far from itself.
Proprioception, not alerting
Every 60 seconds, or every 60 for the ones that move fastest, each service is asked how it is. What comes back is not a yes or no but a latency, a state, and a danger value. 15 of 15 are healthy as this was measured. The interesting readings are not the failures; they are the ones that answer correctly while drifting away from their own normal.
The same box is the way out
The machine that senses the lab is also its border: it holds the VPN tunnels, a proxy and an onion route, and the rules that decide which internal machine leaves through which exit. That is deliberate. The component that knows what normal traffic looks like is the one that shapes it.
